journal on benchBetty Pearson, Former GBBG Staff

Looking to pick up new writing skills or hone your current writing abilities? Through the inspiration of the Garden, you will become engaged in creating prose and poetry that you never knew you could create. Learn how to let your senses and talents paint word pictures that have been waiting to be written only through your creativity.

This four-session class will meet weekly for two hours, Thursdays, September 5, 12, 19 & 26.

The instructor will choose venues throughout the Garden and you will write on a personal electronic device or paper. Each class will include skill review and instruction, as well as personal writing time. The instructor will meet individually with each student during that time to encourage ideas and answer questions.

Instructors

Sandy Johnson, Author & Retired Teacher

Anyone can be a poet! Start your poetry journey by learning the process of writing the Japanese style poem of Haiku. Bring along a photo of a special person, place or object as inspiration as you create your Haiku. Sandy will share examples of her writing as well as Haikus of former students as she reviews writing terms and guides you in the steps to creating your own Haiku. When your poem is complete, you’ll craft it into a decorative card.

Included with the class registration is a copy of Sandy’s book, Wisconsin’s Rock Island – Images in Paintings and Verse with a CD of her song “Rock Island” performed by folksinger and tall ships’ captain Tom Kastle of Madison, WI.

With 18 years of herbal knowledge, Mary obtained her education from The Natural School of Healing and the Dominion Herbal College, along with many hours of self-education. She will discuss the following:

  • Common food additives and sugar substitutes and their effects on the body.
  • What is in your drinking water?
  • Worms and parasites commonly found in the body. Yes… this is true!
  • Wellness maintenance tips to support overall health.
  • Herbs to aid in inflammation.
  • Herbs used for overall healthy living.

Humans have used plants for life and survival since the beginning. We’ll discuss categories of herbs and how they work, and provide examples of easy ones to start growing and work with. We’ll blend and sample a few teas for specific purposes, and make a tincture and a syrup mix to take with you for when a flu or cold strikes.
