Travel With Seeds!

Many plants start their lives as seeds. These seeds often make long trips to the places they will finish growing with a little help from animals.

How do you think animals might move seeds?

Click or tap for answers.

Animals like birds, bats, and bears eat fruit and then poop out the seeds!
Some seeds, known as burs, move by hooking onto
animal fur!
Many critters, like squirrels and chickadees, store seeds for winter. What happens when they don’t come back for them?

What other ways might seeds travel?

The Three Sisters

The Three Sisters is a way of growing food that has nourished the land and its people for thousands of years. Many First Nations, including our local Oneida Nation, have passed down this method of planting from generation to generation.

The Sustainers of Life

When these crops grow together, they help us in many ways. They keep pests away and return nutrients to the soil. Because of this, food can be grown for many generations without taking away from the land. When eaten together, these amazing foods provide many of the nutrients we need to live and be healthy!

The Middle Sister:

The Little Sister:

She protects her sisters with her wide leaves that shade the soil and her prickles that keep away deer and raccoons.
